Windows are more than just a way to bring in light, they frame your entire home. Choosing the right windows is a way to ensure that your vision for your home, both aesthetically and regarding sustainability, will be reached.
A perfect example of this is seen the Marvin Ultimate French Push-Out Casements and Ultimate Inswing French Doors in the special and unique project we called: Burh Becc at Beacon Springs (click here to see details on the entire project.) Burh Becc is one of two Living Building Certified houses in the world.
The Marvin Ultimate French Push-Out Casements and Ultimate Inswing French Doors helped make sure this home not only had environmentally wise materials and sources, but that they complemented the beautiful interior and exterior design.
These amazing windows were FSC certified to ensure that all the materials were purchased from ethical sources that care for both the environment and those harvesting.
Accentuating the open floor plan was one reason these oversized windows and French doors were perfect for Burh Becc. The windows cascade from the ceiling all to the floor and draw your eyes outdoors. The edge of the room feels as if it extends beyond the walls, into the surrounding nature. The skylights bring in additional light to the rooms, providing a warm, natural feel.
A passive solar design was imperative to the building of Burh Becc. Because of that, it was crucial that the windows worked with this design to, not only let light in, but to help keep the heat indoors. We quickly realized that the windows on the south elevation required a higher solar heat gain coefficient to efficiently and effectively heat the Trombe walls inside. We were able to make this happen.
It was demanding, but very rewarding for us to be a part of designing one of two Living Building Challenge certified houses in the world!
When you’re determining what windows to put in your home, it’s important to choose windows that not only fit the aesthetic you are trying to develop, but that also help aid the vision you have for the function and sustainability of your home.
